In Ancient Egypt, the citizens had polytheistic beliefs. This meant that they believed in more than one god. These many gods were relied on to protect the Egyptians in their daily life. The sun god, Re or Ra, was one of the most respected and prayed to god. Religion was connected to an Egyptian’s daily life through the many gods.
3-5 characteristics of the ancient Egyptian religion
Afterlife- The Egyptians view on afterlife was positive. Osiris was the god of the dead and death was supposed to bring you to a peaceful place. There was a book explaining what someone who is near death should expect. Egyptians once believed that the afterlife was only happy for the pharaoh but within centuries everyone decided all people could enjoy the afterlife.
Gods and Goddesses- To add on to what I said earlier about the gods of Egypt, they were more powerful than the ones in Mesopotamia. Some gods were more important than others, for example, the river god Hapi and the sun god Re were valued in Egypt. This was probably because the sun and the river were both important in Egypt for food.
How Pharaohs connect to Religion- Egyptians believed that the Pharaoh was the son of the sun god, Re. Because of this idea, the pharaoh was not just the political leader but also religious leader. The pharaoh participated in many ceremonies in Egypt and was at the top of the social pyramid.
Why and how were the Pyramids built, and how does it connect to the Egyptian Belief system?
The pyramids in Egypt were great tombs built for the Egyptian pharaohs. The pyramids connect to the Egyptian belief system because the pyramids were made to protect the leaders of Egypt in their afterlife. Because of this, some of the pharaoh’s belongings were put in his own tomb to travel with him to the afterlife.
To build a pyramid, thousands of workers worked for years. First, they located stone and shaped them into blocks. Next, the stone was dragged across the desert because wheels would not work in the sand. Finally, the stone blocks were placed on the pyramid. A pyramids shape represents the rays of the sun descending. It is also thought to resemble the primordial mound which is where Egyptians thought the Earth was created.
